Dress Code

There are several purposes for an enforced dress code:

  • It fosters a sense of community which allows students to focus on learning instead of what anyone is wearing
  • It allows focus on the educational process instead of on clothing that may distract from learning
  • Research has shown that students generally behave better when there is a consistent dress code
Teachers will perform a uniform check daily and the policy will be enforced

DRESS CODE VIOLATIONS

Parents are asked to make sure that their child(ren) are in uniform before leaving home. The first time a child is out of uniform, a verbal warning will be given. If the infraction is repeated, a parent notification will be given.  For every three Parent Notifications related to out of uniform, a detention will be issued. This is for grades 1-8.  It is also the responsibility of the parent to monitor the child’s cleanliness in dress and personal hygiene.

Gym attire and spirit wear purchased through the school helps to support FSA-sponsored programs such as the Art Fair and Book Fair. Gym uniforms and spirit wear are available for purchase online in early August each year through FSA and can be picked up at Information Sunday on August 26, 2018. Gym uniforms will also be available for purchase at school events throughout the year.

Alternately, gym attire can be purchased all year at Schools Are Us, 3146 W. 111th St, 773–779–0172.

OUT OF UNIFORM DAYS

General Considerations: On any out of uniform day, clothing must be appropriate: neat, clean, modest, non-offensive.  This means clothing must cover the back, shoulders, midriff, and thighs.  Any printed material should be in keeping with the philosophy of St. Barnabas School.  No flip-flops or shoes without backs may be worn.
Short shorts, and tank tops are not allowed as they do not maintain the modest decorum of a Catholic School setting.

“Spirit Color” Days
The student council may occasionally sponsor Spirit Days where other colors may be worn.  It is not an obligation. If the student does not have the “colors” that the Student Council has determined, students may come in their St. Barnabas gym uniform that day. We encourage all students to show school spirit by wearing St. Barnabas Logo wear on these days.

Other Out of Uniform Days
Students will receive an out of uniform pass to use on their birthday.  At the end of the year, there is a Spirit Day.  On that day, students may wear jeans, shorts, gym shoes, or attire appropriate for the chosen theme.

Administrative Judgment
Administration reserves the right to interpret and apply the Out of Uniform regulations.
