Black History Month @SB

They listened to and discussed story elements of Jacqueline Woodson’s The Day You Begin, Langston Hughes’ Lullaby and Sweet and Sour Animal Book, Angela Johnson’s Daddy Calls Me Man, Faith Ringgold’s Tar Beach, Matthew Cherry’s Hair Love, Elizabeth Zunon’s Grandpa Cacao & Lupita Nyong’o’s Sulwe.

They listened, danced and drew pictures to the tunes of artists including Sam Cooke, James Browne, Michael Jackson, Prince, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Curtis Mayfield, Mavis Staples, Josephine Baker, Charlie Parker, Billie Holliday, Ray Charles, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Little Richard, Nat King Cole and more. Finally, inspired by Faith Ringgold’s illustrations in Tar Beach, they created colorful scenes of themselves flying high above their imagined places. We are learning so much celebrating Black History in kindergarten!
